Museum and the Pokomchí culture

Museo Katinamit

In the year 2001 the museum was founded and opened through the collaboration of American missionaries and a group of Pokomchies who collected and gave objects and information which we currently exhibit. And thanks to the help of the Anacafé association, it was possible to advance this unique project of Pokomchí culture.

The museum was founded with the objective of exposing and at the same time strengthening the Pokomchí culture, by exhibiting common objects and photos of which some are from ancient centuries and others from recent years.

Museo Katinamit exposes and increases the value of the Pokomchí culture of San Cristóbal Verapaz and its surrounding aspects.

Our exposition

The museum is divided into three areas of exhibition.

In the first showroom you find kitchen items and objects of labor. In the room of history and music we have artifacts of the town, photos of different types of dwellings, tipical dressings, the famous temascal and indigenous instruments including the marimba. The showroom of tradition and religion presents Mayan rituals and ceremonial costumes, as well as our town`s customs and the significance of the nahuales in the Mayan calendar. Furthermore, we exhibit the front of a bajareque house.

Experience the Pokomchí culture! Appreciate the ancient life in our town, learn about the processing of the agave wich was used for centuries to obtain a durable fibre; get to know Mayan ceremonials with their costumes, pyrotecnics, the temascal (a Mayan Spa) and traditional music!
